One year to the day.
Insert extremely emo post here.
so let's just talk sports, after all, the yankees are winning and Spain and Nadal just won...
I just read something from a friend's blog, that a dream weekend for Nadal would be if Spain won euro and he won Wimbledon.
I'm not really a big fan of soccer. I try to follow it, even having the privilege to go on a pilgrimage to estadio santiago bernabau while my family was in madrid (I don't really have a particular favorite european team, although i am a fan of real madrid, specifically of Iker Casillas, so I guess you could say my fandom extends to the Spanish national team). Long story short, it's been 44 years since Spain won Europe. Basically, competition has been so tight over there with practically almost every team having a shot at winning everything. Despite almost always being in the running, i guess it just never clicked for them. Come this year, as captained by casillas and under the leadership of Aragones, Spain played their game and was lucky enough to bring it all home.
In 5 years, Wimbledon has known only one men's champion: Roger Federer. Sure, there have been many challenges, but up until recently, all were held off, more often than not with an ease that hinted at a certain invincibility for the world number one. Come now Nadal, who's game, in my opinion, is much better suited for the clay at roland garros. I just had to check now the figures and in 18 meetings, I'm quite to see Nadal leading 12-6.. turns out, it's partly due to a 9-1 record on clay. But getting back, here now was an epic. The longest final ever at Wimbledon, and quite surely one of the closest. I can only imagine what Nadal felt after winning the first 2 sets, each by a single break... only to have Federer fight tooth and nail to get it back to even, taking the next 2 sets on tie-breaks.. Even in the 5th, it took 16 games (9-7) to decide the match. Both players played hard, definitely played their hearts out. But in the end, on their 3rd meeting at the all-England club, Nadal finally broke through.
The Yankees are 6 games away from the all-star break. This year though has a very clear distinction from previous years, no longer are blue-chip prospects being dangled for names like sabathia or Santana, for once in a really long time, the Yankees are looking within first to solve their problems. This of course has had mixed results, especially with the new skipper Girardi at the helm, it almost looks like a rebuilding year if you could call it that (of course still with the expectation and/or goal to win the world series, just look at the number on Girardi's back). Early on in the season, the yankees were roughed up. from a losing record, to cha-cha-ing around the .500 mark, it now seems that the yankees are back to winning form, ready to chase down the Redsox and yes, the Devil Rays. Looking at injuries to hopefuls that haven't been producing so much and to workhorses like Wang, Damon and Posada, obviously it's been tough. Then again, these are the yankees. They can make miracles happen every day (see previous post when damon went 6 for 6). Long and short of it, it's mid season, and they're still in the cellar, staring the devil rays 8.5 games behind. But by no means is the season over, and everyone knows the yankees will put everything they have in it and give it a very strong run, hopefully this year enough to take home a world series ring. Looking back at the recent 4 game set with Boston, it was very disheartening, losing the first 2 games. It seemed even that they were outclassed, almost like yankees - devil rays games of old. Come the last 2 games. Coming into this year, Mussina wasn't even sure of his job as a starter, yet here he is now, winning 11 games already for the yankees, throwing quality starts when the yankees need them now.6 scoreless innings, with veras and farnsworth, likewise holding the fort. Mo did show a small clink in the armor, giving up a run (not sure if this is his first this year), but was able to hold on to a 2-1 win. series now at 2-1. Joba was on the mound against wakefield. With the yankees leading by 1, Joba was hit up for 3 in the 5th. I really felt as if they were losing it again, of course hoping against hope, but preparing myself for another yankees loss. Suck it in, play hard. What else was there to do? It took an extra inning, with Rivera holding it down for 2 innings, but The yankees pulled through, over Papelbon no less witha replacement, gardner who's just there as he is fillng in for Johnny Damon. Great comeback, a strong push to salvage and split what looked like a lopsided series. By no-means is the season over.. but now we see the form coming together, getting a bit more consistent, winning a few games. who knows, may be girardi's personal goal will soon become a reality.
On a personal note. Last week was unproductive to say the least. I won't go into details, but suffice it t say now i have my head back on straight. game. work my ass off, not much else i can do anyway.
edit:
I almost forgot, since i talked so much of sports.. UP also won their opening game against NU. hopefully more to come...
