on the Yankees this past weekend..
This past weekend, I've been treated to 3 live yankees games. All of them, excellent in their own right (even if the yankees didn't win yesterday's game).
I thought i was already lucky after the bombers scored 3 in the bottom of the 9th the other day, capped off by a 2-run walk off homer by Giambi. (unluckily, as i had work, I was not able to see this live, but I did catch it on the replay. I thought this game showed heart on the part of the yankees.
Then came Rasner's gem. 8 innings of 2 run ball. I wouldn't say wasted, it was a great effort on Rasner's part, however, when your team is cha-chaing around the .500 mark, every win counts.
Which brings me to today. This is why the yankees do so well year in year out. It's not the money, maybe it's coz of the talent, but above anything, these guys want to win. After all, last year's work horse just gave up 10 earned runs, not to mention This year's most effective closer giving up a first pitch home run in a tied game. Yet, despite giving up the lead something like 4 times, they reach down and pull it out. Of course the career day from Damon, going 6 for 6 and hitting the walk off ground rule double helped, but looking at the score sheet, Giambi, Posada and A-rod all hit very timely home runs. I'll have to check the box scores later, but I think everyone in the lineup had a timely hit. Likewise With Veras holding out the Royals, putting up goose eggs between Petite and Rivera.
Despite being battered from the start and getting tossed around, the yankees stayed in there, battled, and yes, eventually won. What I thought was an easy game turned out to be what was one of the best if not the best game I've ever seen.
This is the stuff fairy tales are made of. This is why I believe anything is possible if you want it bad enough.
